PUNXSUTAWNEY – The Punxsutawney Municipal Airport has been a part of the community for several decades. The airport was originally known as the Grube Airport, which began services in 1929.

By the 1940′s, the airport was renamed the Punxsutawney Municipal Airport.  The airport sits in a rural area in Bell Township, a short distance from Route 119. The airport does not have commercial flights.

Larry Straitiff, a flight instructor, has been teaching people about flying for more than 10 years.

In an effort to help create more awareness about the airport and its service, an event will be held this weekend. The 14th annual Airport Awareness Day will be held Sunday.

Straitiff said that with the downturn in the economy, the airport is not seeing as much traffic as it should be.  He said this event will allow people to see what the airport has to offer.

There will be numerous aircraft on display, including military aircraft and The Pennsylvania State Police helicopter.

The event is free unless someone is interested a small plane ride. The event begins at 10 a.m.

In the event it rains, a rain date has been scheduled for Sept. 30.
