Manila, Philippines (4E) – The Bandits survived a late rally by the Juggernauts to score a 25-8 win in the finals of the Philippines’ only tackle football league on a rainy Saturday night at a soccer field north of Manila.
The Bandits scored a touchdown early in the first quarter and kept the lead in the next two quarters. Juggernauts star Wally dela Cruz made a solo dash to the end zone with about five minutes left in the fourth quarter to narrow the deficit to 8-16.
The Bandits then scored a touchdown with two minutes left in the last quarter to dash the regullar season-leading Juggernauts’ hopes of winning their first title in the four-year-old league organized by the Arenaball Philippines.
The win at the Marikina Sports Complex marked the third title in a row for the Bandits.
The country’s only tackle football league, inspired by the National Football League, has four teams and about 200 players composed of locals, Filipino-Americans and expatriates.
