Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Jered Weaver pitched a two-hitter as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim used a batting juggernaut in the seventh inning to blank the Oakland Athletics, 6-0, Thursday at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
The Angels kept their playoff hopes alive, snapping a three-game losing skid against the A’s to put them back in the thick of AL West wildcard race with just roughly three weeks remaining in the season.
Weaver threw seven run-less innings with nine strikeouts to improve his card to 17-4 this season.
After six scoreless innings, the Angels lit up the scoreboard by scoring six runs in the seventh inning.
Right fielder Torii Hunter delivered a solo homer off A’s hurler Brett Anderson and the slugging onslaught continued for the Angels with Matt Trumbo, Alberto Callaspo, and Mike Trout driving in a run each.
Hunter then capped the rally with an RBI single to give them a commanding 6-0 lead going into the 8th inning while relief pitchers Kevin Jepsen and Nick Maronde preserved the Angels’ lead in the final two innings.
The Angels (78-66) are four games behind the A’s (82-61) and 8 games below the Texas Rangers (85-57) in the AL West standings.
