SHANKSVILLE — Tuesday marks the 11th anniversary date of a brave group of determined passengers and crew members who overpowered hijackers on United Flight 93, sending the plane into a Somerset County field.
In honor of the Flight 93 hereos, dignitaries like Vice President Joe Biden and U.S Defense Secretary Leon Panetta will pay their respects in Shanksville.
Monday afternoon, Panetta will privately tour the crash site and the memorial. On Tuesday, Biden will deliver keynote remarks at the Flight 93 National Memorial.
Others expected to speak at the Sept. 11 event include Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the president of Families of Flight 93, Patrick White.
The National Park Service advised visitors to arrive at least two hours before the 9:30 a.m. start for security purposes.
Flight 93 Memorial officials said they expect more than 200,000 people to visit the memorial this year, which is more than double the number of visitors in 2011. Campaign Vice President King Laughlin said at the current pace, they expect more than 1,000 bus groups to visit the park as fundraising continues for the next phase of the memorial. New construction is slated to start next year.
The ceremony will be shown live on WJAC-TV and WJACTV.com, starting at 9:55 a.m., just moments before bells are told to honor the 40 passengers and crew members aboard the flight.
