Minneapolis, MN, United States (4E Sports) – Justin Morneau belted a go-ahead homer in the ninth inning and the Minnesota Twins (58-82) overcame an early 4-0 deficit to edge the Cleveland Indians (59-81), 8-7, Sunday at Target Field.
In a heated battle between two underperforming AL Central teams, the Twins eked out the victory by relying on another clutch hit from former AL MVP Morneau.
Morneau, batting .277 with 19 homers and 73 RBI, sent Vinnie Pestano’s hurl over the right wall of Target Field as the Twins took their 9th win in 14 meetings against the Tribe.
Catcher Carlos Santana opened things up with a homer in the second inning to ignite a 4-0 run for the Indians but Justin Mauer, with a two-run homer; and Morneau. with an RBI triple, sparked the Twins to a 5-4 edge .
The see-saw battle continued up to final two innings with Tribe shortstop Jason Donald coming through with an RBI triple in the eight-inning to level it to 7-7.
However, Morneau delivered the game-winning blast to the delight of Twins fans.
