Carmel, IN, United States (4E Sports) – Rory McIlroy further cemented his status as the best player in golf Sunday, recording a two-shot victory at the BMW Championship.
McIlroy has won his last two starts, both FedEx Cup Playoff events, and three of his last four, including the PGA Championship – his second Major.
McIlroy put the finishing touches on his fourth win of the season with a 5-under-par 67 at Crooked Stick Golf Club to finish at 20-under 268. He will now head the field at the Tour Championship in Atlanta in two weeks and is the favorite to win the $10 million bonus that will go to the FedEx Cup points leader.
Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson tied for second place at 18-under.
“I just wanted to go out and play as best as I could,” said McIlroy. “I knew if I played to my ability that I would win events. I didn’t think that everything would happen so quickly, but I’m just on a great run at the minute and trying to keep that going for as long as possible.”
With the win, McIlroy became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win back-to-back PGA Tour events. He also joins Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players since 1960 to win six PGA Tour titles before the age of 24.
“Rory was putting on a show out there,” Woods said. “He’s doing the things he needs to do and as he said, he’s feeling very confident about his game.”
