New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Essence Carson recorded 20 points and Cappie Pondexter added 16 markers as the New York Liberty defeated the Washington Mystics, 79-73, Saturday at Prudential Center.
The Liberty foiled down a late surge from the Mystics, leaning on the clutch baskets of Carson and Plenette Pierson especially in the last two minutes.
After leading almost the entire game, New York overcame a spirited run by the Mystics, who outscored the home team 23-16 in the fourth quarter.
However, Carson and Pierson scored the last nine points for New York to finally put the Mystics away.
Monique Currie (20 pts), Crystal Langhorne (19 pts), and Jasmine Thomas (18 pts) combined for 58 points but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Mystics from absorbing their 21th loss in 26 games.
The Liberty are close to securing the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a 10-16 record.
