Chester, PA, United States (4E Sports) – Real Salt Lake tried using a different formation Friday night in its bid to halt a winless run, but eventually settled for a 0-0 draw against the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.
RSL employed a 4-1-4-1 scheme at Philadelphia, but managed to earn just a point with the new look.
An apparently tired RSL team and the Union, also looking to put its an end to its own winless streak, combined to put only one shot on goal in a lackluster first half.
Salt Lake entered the match with a 0-3-0 record in league games this August.
To address its offensive woes, RSL came out with a new formation Friday, placing Alvaro Saborio up top alone, while both Javier Morales and Luis Gil were place in midfield.
The Claret-and-Cobalt once again failed to find the back of the net on the road. They have only scored once in their last six roads in all competition.
Real Salt Lake was playing its third contest in six days.
Philadelphia, which last tasted victory on July 29 in a 2-1 rout of New England, created better scoring chances, but was unable to finish and snatch three points.
Friday’s result RSL improved to 2-0-3 all-time against the Union. All three draws have been on the road.
Real Salt Lake (13-10-4, 43 points), which sits four points back of Western Conference leaders San Jose, will again try to end its winless streak Sept.1 against D.C. United at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The Union, which fell to 7-12-4, remained in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Philly will attempt to get back into the win column and end its four-game winless streak Wednesday against Columbus.
