Phelps, May-Treanor appear on Wheaties boxes

New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Bemedalled Olympians Michael Phelps and Misty May-Treanor are the featured athletes on limited edition Wheaties boxes that will be on supermarket shelves next month.
Phelps won four gold medals in different swimming events in London to bring his Olympic medal haul to 22, including 18 gold while May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh won three consecutive gold medals in beach volleyball.
“Michael Phelps and Misty May-Treanor have inspired others to get out and achieve their own personal best,” said Jim Wilson, Wheaties marketing manager. “Wheaties is proud to honor them and to fuel athletes everywhere.”
“I received a lot of comparisons throughout my career, but I always wanted to be the best that I could be,” Phelps said in a statement.
“I wanted to do something that nobody else had done before and I wanted to change the sport of swimming. Thanks to Wheaties and their support of my Foundation, I hope that my accomplishments will help inspire others to pursue their dreams,” he added.
It will be Phelps’ second appearance for the “breakfast of champions.” He appeared on the box after the 2004 Olympics after winning six gold and two bronze medals but transferred to Kellogg’s after the 2008 Olympics.

For the last 85 years, Wheaties has been known for featuring athletes on its boxes. Leading to the Olympics, Wheaties featured three former U.S. Olympic greats on retro boxes: Mary Lou Retton, Bruce Jenner and Muhammad Ali.
Not to be outdone, rival Rival Kellogg’s has gold-medal-winning gymnast Gabby Douglas on the front of its Corn Flakes boxes.
