Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – Vinny Del Negro will return to the sidelines for the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Clippers announced on the team’s website that they picked up option on Del Negro to return for his third season with the team which he steered to the second round of the playoffs.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. The team had been given until June 1 to either pick up or decline their third-year option on Del Negro.
Del Negro has a 72-76 record since the Clippers hired him in 2010.
Del Negro’s job was in jeopardy after the Clippers were swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals.
Several players and team officials have expressed support behind Del Negro, saying he did an outstanding job in turning around the Clippers from a perennial cellar-dweller to a playoff contender, thanks to the entry of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.
“I think coach did an outstanding job,” Paul said.
“I think Vinny did a great job,” said Clippers general manager Neil Olshey in echoing Paul’s statement.
Del Negro spent the previous two seasons as coach of the Chicago Bulls and finished his stint with an 81-81 record. He lost in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs both times.
