Hurricane Bud set to batter Mexico

Miami, Fla., United States (4E) – Hurricane Bud was headed for the southwestern coast of Mexico Friday packing 110 mph winds.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “Some weakening is forecast Friday, but Bud is still expected to reach the coast of Mexico as a hurricane.”

The strong Category 2 storm was located 130 miles southwest of Manzanillo and 195 miles south of Cabo Corrienties at 5 a.m. ET Friday.

The powerful storm was moving at a clip of about 8 mph.

A hurricane warning has been issued for Manzanillo to northwest of Cabo Corriente, where winds are forecast to exceed 39 mph over the next 36 hours and eventually top speeds of 74 mph.

Tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for larger areas of Mexico.

Bud is expected to soak Mexico’s southwestern coast with some 6 to 10 inches of rain, with as much as 15 inches falling in some areas.

Bud is the second named tropical storm of the 2012 hurricane season.
