Berkley, CA, United States (4E) – Next time you need a rush, a boost , a fix–skip the sugar; it can make you stupid.

That comes from a new study about of the prestigious and scholarly UCLA.

Among the researchers findings, published in the Journal of Physiology, in a study on rats, fructose slows down the brain and memory functions. Too much of the sweetness can also inhibit learning.

There is a way to offset the effect. Taking omega-3 fatty acids with meals appears to negate the decline.

The study authors wrote, “Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think. Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain’s ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage.

Americans consume some 47 pounds of sugar, and an additional 35 pounds of high fructose corn syrup per year. That is an alarming increase from the 2 pounds ingested in the late 1800s.

Linked to a sugary diet are the soaring rates of diabetes, obesity and even cancer.

Health experts and First Lady Michelle Obama have been on a crusade to get all of America getting more fruits and vegetables, and less sugar laden products. Advocates of nutrition have pushed for the removable of vending machines that peddle sugary soda, juices, candy and other food stuffs from schools.

This new finding is a wakeup call for students of all ages as exam and cram time approaches.
