‘Avengers’ breaks $1 billion to set another box office record

Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – “The Avengers” continued to marvel at the weekend box office, breaking the $1 billion mark.
The superhero blockbuster earned $103.2 million to take the top spot for the second consecutive weekend; its domestic total now totals $373.2 million.
Adding the $95.4 million brought in from overseas markets, “Avengers” boosted its international receipts to $628.9 million, and its worldwide haul to date amounts to just over $1 billion, only 19 days after it debuted in some markets.
“The Avengers” is the first movie ever to rake in more than $100 million domestically in its second weekend, passing the previous best of $75.6 million for “Avatar.” The action adventure flick topped $300 million domestically Saturday after just nine days in release, passing the record set by “The Dark Knight,” which reached that level in 10 days.
Tim Burton’s vampire-themed “Dark Shadows,” starring Johnny Depp, garnered a distant second spot. The film opened with $28.8 million.
Coming in at No.3 was the successful “Think Like A Man,” with 6.3 million, followed by “The Hunger Games” with $4.4 million. “The Lucky One,” with $4.1 million, rounded out the top five.
