U.S., Canada advance in Olympic volleyball pool play

Long Beach, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – The United States men’s volleyball team continued its dominance Thursday by sweeping Mexico, 25-23, 25-19, 25-14 to advance in the semifinals of the NORCECA Olympic qualifying tournament at Long Beach State.

The United States moved two wins from clinching a guaranteed Olympic berth following another masterful performance against Mexico.

Led by another outstanding game from opposite Clay Stanley (14 points) and outside hitter Matt Anderson (12 points), the Americans dominated the Mexicans in kills (40-31), blocks (8-4), and aces (6-3).

The United State will face the winner in the quarterfinal game between Trinidad and Tobago or the star-studded Cuba, which was stunned by Canada 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 in the battle for automatic semifinal berth.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico dispatched Dominican Republic to set up an all-Latino quarterfinal war with Mexico.

Trinidad and Tobago pummeled Costa Rica to try their luck against Cuba.
