Anaheim, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – The wait is over and the Los Angeles Angels are hoping that now Albert Pujols can get back to being Albert Pujols.
Benched Saturday to clear his head in the midst of a season-long slump. Pujols returned to action Sunday and belted his first home run of the season to lift the Angels to a 4-3 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Angels fans had grown restless waiting for their $246-million-dollar man to produce and booed him Friday in a hitless performance. Pujols gave them reason to cheer Sunday.
Pujols flew out and struck out in his first two at-bats, extending his career-long homer-less streak to 110 at-bats. He connected off of Blue Jays righty Drew Hutchison in the fifth inning for a two-run home run that gave the Angels a 4-1 lead.
“This game is about making adjustments and being patient,” Pujols said. “Sometimes you want to do too much, and it’s part of it. If you don’t, my dad always told me, you’re not human. And I’m human.”
Even with the home run, Pujols has only seven RBIs so far this season and it was just his second extra-base hit since April 19.
“I don’t think anything’s been lifted off my shoulders, man,” Pujols said. “I don’t think about what you guys write or what you think. I know what I’m capable of doing, and I come out here every day and try to get myself ready for the game and give 110 percent to this team and to this organization. And if I do that, there’s nothing to be sorry about.”
