Washington, DC, United States (AHN Sports) – Mike Green’s blast with 5:48 remaining in regulation lifted the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon in a second-round Eastern Conference battle.
The Caps evened the series at 2-2 heading into Monday’s game 5 at Madison Square Garden.
Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring for Washington at 12:43 of the opening period before Artem Anisimov evened the match at 1-1 just 70 seconds into the second stanza.
Nicklas Backstrom beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist midway through the period, but the Rangers knotted things up at 2-2 with Marian Gaborik’s second goal in two games.
Gaborik netted the winner in game three when the Blueshirts won in three overtimes.
Washington shook off that setback for Saturday’s impressive win, however, led by goalie Braden Holtby’s 18 saves and a ton of blocked shots by his teammates.
