Estoril Open: Del Potro vs. Gasquet in final, Kanepi claims fourth title
Estoril, Portugal (AHN Sports) – Juan Martin Del Potro grinded out a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka to arrange a showdown with Richard Gasquet in the finals of 2012 Estoril Open Saturday.
Del Potro moved a step closer towards winning back-to-back Estoril Open crowns after overcoming a test from Wawrinka in their semifinal duel.
The Argentine finished off Wawrinka in roughly 90 minutes, recording five aces while only converting one of his seven break points. The match was interrupted by a 15-minute rain delay but that won’t stop Del Porto from advancing.
“It’s always tough to play Stan,” Del Potro said. “He never gives you anything. “It will be the same against Richard tomorrow — another tough player on clay. I will have to improve my game even more if I’m to win.
Gasquet continued his impressive run in the tournament Saturday by surviving Spain’s Albert Ramos 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 in Saturday’s three-set thriller.
Meanwhile, Kaia Kanepi emerged victorious in her epic three-set finals duel with Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 to bag her fourth WTA career singles title.
Kanepi overcame an opening set loss to rally past a very resilient Suarez-Navarro in a hardly-fought finals played before a pumped up crowd at the Estádio Nacional.
