Abuja, Nigeria (AHN) – A gang of robbers attacked a cattle market in northern Nigeria, killing 34 people in retaliation for the death of one of their members by traders who had earlier caught the man trying to rob the market.
An emergency official said Thursday that the victims were at a local hospital in the city of Potiskum. They died from wounds suffered when armed attackers threw bombs and fired rifles at the market Wednesday night.
Police spokesman Toyin Gbadegesin said the market was also set ablaze, killing many livestock and injuring cattle dealers inside. Emergency workers, including firefighters, were searching for survivors in the market Thursday.
According to police, the gang members had tried to rob the market earlier but traders foiled their plan. The robbers fled, but traders caught one and beat him up. They then poured petrol on him and set him alight. He was burned to death.
