Haas stuns Tsonga, advances into BMW Open quarterfinals

Munich, Germany (AHN Sports) – Veteran campaigner Tommy Haas turned back time and unleashed his vintage form to shock No.1 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-1, 6-4 in Wednesday’s second-round match at the 2012 BMW Open.
Haas, who turned 34 in April, needed just 59 minutes to dispatch Tsonga before a pumped-up crowd at the MTTC Iphitos complex.
After dealing with nagging injuries these past seasons, Haas looked sharper than ever as he totally obliterated the Frenchman with a good service game and an array of beautiful shots.
Haas will make his first quarterfinals appearance in any tournament this year, facing another seasoned tennis player in Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.
Baghdatis defeated qualifier Dustin Brown 1-6 6-4 6-1 in one hour and 47 minutes contest to earn a date with a rejuvenated Haas.
Croatia’s Marin Cilic also advanced to the quarterfinal round by recording a 6-3, 6-2 win over Germany’s Matthias Bachinger.
Meanwhile, No.3 seed Stanislas Wawrinka cruised to the quarterfinal round after booting out Spain’s 7-6. 6-1 at the 2012 Estoril Open. Wawrinka will next face Netherland’s Robin Haase, who survived Iñigo Cervantes Huegun 7-5, 6-4, 6-2.
On the women’s side, no.1 seed Roberta Vinci easily booked her ticket to the next round with a 6-2, 6-0 mastery over Maria Joao Koehler.
No.2 seed Maria Kirilenko barely staved off elimination after surviving Karin Knapp 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 in a three-set thriller.
