SUV falls from Bronx parkway, 7 killed
Bronx, NY, United States (AHN) – Seven members of a Bronx family, including three children, were killed Sunday when their SUV fell 60 feet from the elevated portion of the Bronx River Parkway and crashed in a non-public area of the Bronx Zoo.
The New York Police Department identified the victims as Maria Gonzalez, 45, and her daughter, Jocelyn, 10, and father, Jacob Nunez, 85; Maria Nunez, 39, and her daughters Niely Rosario, 7, and Marly Rosario, 3, and mother Ana Julia Martinez, 81. All died on the spot.
According to investigators, Maria Gonzalez was driving the 2004 Honda Pilot southbound to her home in Taylor Avenue when the car hit the center median of the parkway and the curb flipping it over the guardrail and down to the wooded area of the zoo.
Those inside were crushed to death by the impact of the crash.
The SUV did not hit anyone on the ground as that portion of the zoo had no animal exhibit and was off limits to visitors.
Authorities claim the SUV was traveling at high speed on the parkway, about 70 mph, before the accident happened. The investigation is ongoing.
