Lutz, FL, United States (AHN Sports) – Louisville men’s basketball assistant coach Richard Pitino, son of Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino, will be the next head coach at Florida International.
According to multiple reports, Richard Pitino has been tabbed to replace replace Isiah Thomas.
Thomas went 26-65 record in three seasons at FIU, including 8-21 this season, and was fired on April 6.
The move caught Thomas by surprise and the Golden Panthers walked out of an awards banquet in protest of the firing.
Pitino, 29, started his coaching career in 2004 and has been an assistant at Florida, Duquesne, Northeastern and College of Charleston.
He has coached for three seasons in two different stretches with the Cardinals and has never been a head coach.
Pitino is a graduate of Providence College, where he was the men’s basketball team’s manager under then-head coach Tim Welsh.
