Study: Beer makes men smarter
Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) – Beer, the cold, frothy, amber colored brew that many men declare the “best darn drink in the world,” may also make them smarter.
That is according to a new study from researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
Among findings in the study, men who had imbibed a couple of beers actually were better at solving brain teasers than their tea-totaling counterparts.
For the study, the researchers developed a bar game in which 40 men were given three words and asked to come up with a fourth word that fit the pattern.
Half of the players enjoyed two cold ones before playing. The other half remained thirsty and sober.
The drinkers finished their problems in 12 seconds. The non-drinkers took 15.5 seconds to complete the task.
As reported online at the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences website, at a 0.07 blood alcohol level, people were worse at working memory tasks, but they were better at creative problem solving tasks.
The researchers say the findings contradict the popular belief that alcohol encumbers analytical thinking and muddles the mind.
