Clearfield Girls Track Team Splits; Boys Swept in Triangular with Bald Eagle Area and Mifflin County

CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield Area High School girls track team split their meets with Bald Eagle Area and Mifflin County on Tuesday afternoon to stay even on the season at 2-2. The Lady Bisons beat BEA 105-45 and were defeated by Mifflin County 111-39.

The boys team was swept to drop to 1-3 on the year. They were beaten 83-67 by BEA and 118-32 by Mifflin County.

Once again, Jessica Shomo was the top performer for the girls as she picked up four wins versus Bald Eagle. She won the 100 meters, the long jump, and the triple jump, then was on the winning 4×100 relay.

Beau Swales picked up multiple wins in the sprints on the boys side.

Head Coach John Jacob had this to say about the girl’s team, “It is nice to be sitting at 2-2 for the girls at this point in the season. Last year the girls were 0-4 and waiting for a win. This year we are starting stronger and continuing to improve. The improvements are hard to see against such a deep team as Mifflin County, but as a coaching staff we are seeing improvements all over the track and in the field. The areas we are seeing times start drop is in the hurdles and distance races. Courtney Smith lowered both her times in the hurdles and ended up with two nice wins. Also Lauren Conrad and Juliana Mellgard helped the distance department with sweeps in all of our distance events. While Becca Lindstrom picked up a huge win the shot put with a season best throw. Not to be outdone, Rachel Thompson won the javelin and discus against Mifflin County.”

About the boys, Jacob added, “On the boy’s side Beau Swales continues to post some very impressive times in the 100m and 200m. To walk away with wins against Bald Eagle and Mifflin County was very impressive and the times he posted are even more impressive. Tyler Stratton is also looking to become a threat in the hurdles as he lowered his times in both events. He is starting to eliminate a lot of mistakes and will only continue to improve as he gains experience. I can’t say enough about Alec Freeman. Last year as a freshman he had a solid season; but this year he has stepped forward to become a leader for our young distance team. He is learning the tactics and strategy that is going to make him a real threat as he matures in the distance events. It was also nice to see Corey Knepp back as he picked up his first win of the season in the shot put.

Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday April 10 when they travel to Tyrone to take on Tyrone and Bellefonte.
