Mounties Pin 49-23 Loss On Golden Tide Wrestlers

February 3, 2012 at 5:58 AM by · 10 Comments

PHILIPSBURG – Two streaks continued Thursday night as Philipsburg-Osceola  outwrestled Curwensville on the Mounties home mat 49-23.

For the Mounties, 11-2, it was the 11th straight win and for the Golden Tide, 5-13, it was the 1oth straight defeat.

The Tide was coming off of a very emotional loss to rival Clearfield, 38-37 on Criteria “H”, on Tuesday night while the Mounties wrestled on Wednesday beating Bellefonte 40-33 in the quarterfinals of the District 6 Team Wrestling Duals.

Duane Wriglesworth, Curwensville head coach, liked how his team responded after the tough loss to Clearfield just two days before, “It’s really tough to come back from a tough loss like we had on Tuesday night against Clearfield. I was very pleased with how the kids rebounded this evening. They wrestled with a lot of enthusiasm, but we simply lost because we were outgunned in several weights by a very good Philipsburg-Osceola squad.”

Curwensville made it interesting to start the match as they jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead as Ricky Magnuson picked up a major decision, 13-5, at 220, over Mason Pryde of Philipsburg followed by a pin for Tide junior Brad Stubbs in 3:57 over Nick Gray.

Philipsburg-Osceola would win the next four bouts with three pins and a major decision to forge in front 22-10.

Mountie Chris Thompson won his 29th bout of the season by pinning Sam Bressler in just 1:04 at the 106 pound weight class before Bryan Descavish of P-O pinned Travis Lansberry at 113 lbs. in 2:38 to give the Mounties a lead they would never relinquish.

The Philipsburg-Osceola lead would grow even bigger as at 120 Brian Evans took Tyler Mays of the Tide into the third period before pinning the sophomore in 5:04 followed by a major decision for Mountie Caleb Shively over Brandon Sass 9-0.

Curwensville’s Jake Keller stopped the Philipsburg run with a 15-0 technical fall over Justin Millard at 132 inching the Tide a little closer at 22-15. For Keller it was his 26th victory of the season with only two defeats.

At 138 pounds the Mounties pulled out another fall as Andrew Greenawalt took Tide sophomore Trey McKenzie to his back for the win in 5:28.

Senior Alex Holt of Curwensville had a 2-1 lead in the second period at 145 when he turned and pinned Mountie Jetta Emley in 2:26 putting the Tide as close as they would come the rest of the night, trailing 28-21 with five bouts remaining.

Philipsburg would win four the final five bouts with Mountie standout Logan Walstrom pinning Dakota Royer in 1:53 at 152 to pick up win number 30 on the year.

One team point was deducted from Curwensville after the 152 pound weight class for unsportsmanlike conduct

Jeff Thompson of Philipsburg took only :56 to record a fall over Tide junior Nathan Wriglesworth at 160 putting the Mounties ahead 40-20.

Austin Pollick would get the final team points for the Golden Tide at 170 when he gained an 8-2 decision over Parker Watson of Philipsburg. Pollick lead 5-0 after the first two minutes and utilized an escape and takedown in the third period to secure the win.

The final two bouts went to the Mounties with Dennis Lumadue edging Chad Desmett of Curwensville at 182 pounds 4-2 with a third period reversal and Brad Anstine picking up a fall in 1:25 over Jake Kavelak at 195.

PrincessD – you obviously have not a clue. There was not any intention on harming anyone in wrestling by the curwensville wrestler – and if you paid any attention to him over the years you would know that. What you do not know, is that the father was threatened by not just (who is belileved to be) the father of the oppenent but by two others as well that day in P-burg. The T-shirts were not directed to the boy, but to those who made those threats. The move is something he has used for years, and has used multiple times this year with noone else defaulting over it except for the one in P-burg. The move itself is not illegal.

Again, because of the actions of a few in December, i do know that certain individuals were not comfortable in going back to PO with the threats that were made. The fans of the boy, were there for his support, and to acknowledge them oves he uses are in fact leagal.

I do want to say thank you to those who see boh sides and realize re severity of it. I don’t mean to make a huge ordeal but when someone’s well being is threatened its not I’m to sit back and not speak up. I am writing about it because if that man had the audacity to act that way in public I can make sure is noticed somewhere that he got away with it. I only wanted my client and others to be comfortable at the match like I would want at any other event. I’m sorry maybe I should have just let him go on and on, but I was raised better. I was raised to stand up for myself with a stern voice ad stand my ground for what is right and those comments an actions were by no means acceptable. I wish all the athletes the best, I respect them when respect is deseved and I cheer them on to making accomplishments and reaching their goals, I hope that someone sees this and comprehends what it means to conduct good sportsmanship..

I am a Mountie Fan, a mother of 2 boys, 1 of which is a little mountie wrestler. I was at the game that night sitting in that area, in which I had full view of what took place. We talk about good sportsman like conduct. I saw and heard excitement from our mountie fans. I also saw unsportsman like conduct from the curwensville fans,a large lady sitting a few rows up making loud comments in which no one confronted her at any point during the matches. At one point during the matches a young girl can strutting up and stood in a man’s face and began to yell at him accusing him of swearing, which never happened. I read in the comments this girl states she is a college grad and has a young child. You must have excelled in the short story telling, because that is what it was, there was no truth to anything she stated as I was there. McDonald’s should hire you because that was ONE BIG WOPPER of a story my dear. I hope someone teaches your child HONESTY and that LYING leads to MORE LIES which you will have a hard time remembering the STORY since that is what it is a LIE !!!! I feel sorry for you. Because unsportmans like behavior is the least of your problems. You might want to think about the wrong you’ve been posting about this man…..and MAN UP to your wrong and apologize!

    • Cs17 says:

Obviously you need to get some class. I was there working with a client, the child was NOT my own. I was invited there as a guest to help the child work on social anxieties and it was none of your concern as to how I got the child to feel comfortable and safe in that gym, with the crowd that surrounded them. It was not hurting anyone to have them sitting on the floor coloring in a coloring book to become comfortable enough to sit in a gym with idiots like that poor excuse of a man sitting there saying comments like that. Do not ever suggest that I go work at McDonald’s because you seem to have a disconnect in understanding what went on that evening. I have three degrees, two of which are bachelors, more than I’m sure you will ever earn in your life. I grew up in sports I know people say things that they don’t mean, but try explaining that to a child with social anxieties and is fearing that some adult is threatening her family. I was not yelling at that “man”, he was asked numerous times to stop and he didn’t. I was assaulted by this poor excuse of an adult, I do not accuse the entire fan base of PO, I do however have a a lot of disappointment in the ones who behaved like heathens. I don’t care who wrestled what match, or who got hit with the unsportsmanlike conduct, it’s a high school wrestling match not states or something of serious relevance. I was upset because a fifty year old who claims he works at a prison an would never swear, jumped the handrail and was two inches into my face spitting on me because I said ” the key to successful athletes is good sportsmanship.” that by no means is reason to assault someone especially a young woman doing her job, bettering a child’s life that is not supposed to have to deal with people like him and the group he was with. If he truly works at a prison I hope he realizes he could be behind bars! Get some class! I’m glad to see that other PO fans can see both sides and still agree that he wa out of control. It is so sad that people like you have to attack someone by telling th to work at McDonald’s because you think I’d lie about something like this. A child was so scared of this guy they hyperventilated. Really!? When someone tells you to stop making comments listen, not everyone in this world understands how to interpret fans cheering or commenting. I did nothing wrong so I will own up to that fact that I will stand up for myself, I will do what is best for the child, I will not tolerate unsportsmanlike fans from anywhere, I was there as a guest and was treated terribly, so I will make it known that it is unacceptable for anyone to get away with that behavior. I have been nothing but honest and in my future the man I marry and I will teach our children to tell the truth, be respectful and curdiousy to everyone. They will also have sportsmanship because teir father is a very succesful PA wreslter, PA football player and a PA offical; so dont you worry my children will have a very good understanding of what it means to be a succusseful athlete because they will have excellent sportsmanship. If you had any idea who I was you would know that. Get over yourself no one deaerves to be treated that way. Win or lose, fan or athlete, parent or child you must be sportsman like in that setting ad that’s all I wante him to be and he lacked that ability as do you as you’ve shown.

  4. jk22 says:

didn’t curwensville have a team point deducted for sportsmanship? just saying.. I don’t condone what was done, nor was I there to witness the event, but don’t go tearing down a whole fan base for a few that might have caused a problem. you don’t see mountie fans on here bashing the kid for throwing a temper tantrum because he lost. We are excited because we are having a good year. We love our wrestlers, we love our fans, and I would have asked the man also to chill out. We take pride in our Mounties and we don’t want to portray a bad image. But again, I say, don’t judge the whole group for what a few did. My son was one of the elementary wrestlers that walked across the mat that night, and when he is wrestling varisty some day, I hope people treat him and his component with respect by not saying hurtful things. But yes, we do say, push his head down, but I personally would never say “kill him”. That’s not right and if this went down the way you say, then yes, something should be done about it. We usually aren’t rude.. just overly energetic. I sat with a group of BEA when they visited our gym and while I hooted and hollered for us to win, I clapped right along with them when their wrestlers won. It’s respect for the kids, the coaches, the teammates, and the other fans. I am sorry that you felt frightened in our gym. I’m sure you should at the very least get an apology from this man for acting the way he did. and as a Mountie fan, I will take the first step and say.. I’m sorry…

  5. Cs17 says:

Sorry this is a little delayed, but I feel that it needs to be shared.
During this match there was a overwheleming amount of unsportsman like behavior. The fans were more than rude and took things way too seriously, it’s a high school wrestling match, and I can understand being die hard for it but be sportsman like. Towards the end of the event I confronted a man who seemed to be in his 50′s, after he had made comments about his child’s match against another wrestler stating,”kill him! pound ‘em into the floor!” among other things. These comments went on all night. I had enough, I was there as a guest and did not feel welcomed or safe and had a child under the age of 8 with me, the child is balling their eyes because the kid this guy is saying to “kill” is her sibling. I walked up to this man and his group. I said in a clam and self controled tone, ” The key to successful athletes, is good sportsmanship.” He stared at me and said, ” I agree.” I then came back with the comment, ” Then you sir, show me that you are not teaching your son to be successful because you do not have good sportsmanship.” That man, jumped over the hand rail of the bleachers, within two inches of my face, screamed at me that I needed to get out of his gym. That he works for a prison and doesn’t put up with people like me and I was a stupid girl and had no clue about wrestling, etc. He went on and on. He was screaming so loud and so close to my face that he was spitting on me! I told him in a calm but stern voice, ” I am not raising my voice, I have a child with me sir, and you need to control yourself. This is a public event and you are told to be sportsman like.” He continued to scream at me, then his wife joined in, and two other fans, cussing me out?! All I said was that he needed to stop badgering the wrestlers family with his comments, they were not appropriate and were causing the sibling to cry. She was terrified and when he was asked to stop he laughed and continued waving his hand off at the family. Now I’m sorry, but that is not sportsmanship, and the Philipsburg AD is not banning this man from the gym even for one match after he stood there causing a scene. I’m a very small girl, just graduated from college, and all I wanted was for this jerk to shut his mouth so the child would stop crying. Was I wrong to tell him in a civilized manner that he was out of line? Really a fifty some year old adult and three others, take on a college student because she asked them to be courteous and sportsman like? I am extremely disappointed that the school police, game manager and AD, are not punishing this man for his behavoir. What if that man had hit me, shoved me or all of them did something? Is that what it would have took to get some crowd control in that gym? Spitting in someone’s face is assult and the lack of authority in that gym is making it very difficult for people who are trying to enjoy these events, with people like that in them. “The key to successful athletes, is good sportsmanship.” Don’t forget that.

    • clfdman says:

This happened in Philipsburg? What a surprise. Philipsburg notoriously has the loudest, most obnoxious fans of any wrestling school I have witnessed over my 40 plus years of following high school wrestling. They are having their first winning season since 2003, so they now feel they have to start up their obnoxiousness again. I sure hope you follow through even further with this, as this is obviously totally unacceptable behavior. A rarely witness this behavior from anyone but Philipsburg “fans”. Shame on them, or even if it’s only a few, shame on the others for not stepping in.

      • PrincessD says:

I was there that evening, and I agree with Cs17 that good sportsmanship is a necessity and is a very important part of every sport. As a Philipsburg-Osceola supporter who attended that evening, I couldn’t help but respond. (I do have to mention that I was not sitting in the area where this took place, and didn’t know about it until well after the fact when I saw Cs17 discussing it with school personnel, so I don’t have any first-hand input, and I’m not going to speculate on something that I was not involved in.) However, clfdman, you weren’t there and I see no need to fuel a thread of bashing on here or make assumptions on something if you were not there in attendance to give accurate input. She needs to do what she feels is best and appropriate, and I would encourage someone who actually was there and saw this take place (it must have been quite the scene and lot’s of people in that area should have noticed if the events are as horrific as she states, with a man jumping over a handrail, screaming, etc.) to either speak in her defense or shed a different light to the severity of the situation that took place. But, what I can tell you from that evening is that the unsportsman-like conduct was matched, if not exceeded, by the Curwensville fans who arrived wearing very rude T-Shirts supporting a Curwensville wrestler’s spread-eagle move that injured one of our wrestlers at another event in December, along with the point the team lost due to unsportsman like conduct. So, clfdman, if you must point fingers I feel the need to remind you that when you point a finger at someone, there’s always 3 pointing back at you. So, always be honest, careful, considerate, and fair when making accusations, assumptions, and/or commenting on something. Especially, if you weren’t even there or part of the event. Thank you

    • POWrestlingFan says:

I am very sorry that this happened to you at our school. However, please don’t think that every PO Fan is like the person you encountered, the way clfdman insinuated, maybe he should look in a mirror. After reading your post and seeing that this gentleman (I say this loosely) worked at a prison, I really don’t think he was a parent. I happen to know all of the kids that are on the team and there is only one parent that works at a prison and I can guarantee it would not have been him. There is no call for this behavior in student athletics. I was at the match and can say that I did not see anything that you mentioned going on, but then again I was there to watch the match. I am sure if you would have alerted the AD he would have removed him from the match and maybe from the gym for the rest of the season. Please remember who’s team was deducted a team point for unsportsman like conduct. Also, lets not forget the shirts that were worn into our gym by many of the Curwensville fans that made a stab at one of our wrestlers who was hurt earlier in the season. I am not saying what happened to you was right, but your fans may have just fueled the fire a little themselves.

      • Cs17 says:

I agree that both sides of fans were acting unacceptable, I wasn’t there for the match I was there working. I could care less which side this guy was from I would have told him te same thing if he was curwensville. The point is you never have a reason to spit in someone’s face have some self control and dignity. Be an example of good sportsmanship and show how to act at events that are about competition, don’t cause scenes. I did contact the AD the next because he was not at the match like I believe he should have been. The “man” was sought out and contacted and is “free to go”. That is unbelievable to me, spitting in a young woman’s face because she calmly said have some curdiousy? I hope he realizes that he is just as guilty as the people he claims he patrols at the prison he works at, he needs to realize he could very well be behind them too.
