Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – Blake Griffin had another monster game, logging 20 points, nine boards and eight assists as the Los Angeles Clippers slipped past the Memphis Grizzlies with a 98-91 decision Thursday night at Staples Center.
The win put the Clippers back on track after Wednesday’s emotional loss to the Lakers.
Chris Paul added 18 points in his second game since returning after missing five games because of hamstring problem. He also had seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Clippers, who had alternated wins and losses over their last six games, bolted out from the starting gate to take a 16-point lead in the first half.
They shot a whooping 63.2 percent from the field and hit four for six from 3-point range that led to a 29-17 edge after the first quarter, but L.A. had some tentative moments that allowed Memphis to get back into the game.
The gritty Grizzlies were slightly outscored 29-28 after the third period, but would not go away easy after facing an 89-80 deficit.
With 1:19 left, Memphis drew within 91-89 courtesy of two Marc Gasol free throws, but Caron Butler countered with a baseline drive to put the Clips ahead, 93-89.
Mo Williams netted 18 points, while Butler finished with 16 markers for the Clippers, who shot an overall 48.6 percent (35 of 72), including making 9-of-22 from 3-point range.
Defense was also key for the Clips, who held the Grizzlies to less than 36 percent shooting. L.A. also converted 24 points off 17 Memphis turnovers.
Rudy Gay led the way for the Grizzlies with 24 points. Gasol had 16 points and 11 rebounds in Memphis’ second straight loss.
