Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Entertainment) – Just when you thought you could escape Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” “Glee” delivers a cover of the universally-panned song. The cover has already hit iTunes and will be performed on the show’s prom-themed episode Tuesday.
The characters Puck (Mark Salling), Artie (Kevin McHale), and Sam (Chord Overstreet) perform a dance version of the song at the school’s prom, singing the track’s now infamous lyrics like, “Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday/ Today i-is Friday, Friday / We-we-we so excited.”
Show creator Ryan Murphy defend the show’s use of the song, whose music video has earned over 133 million views on YouTube. “The show pays tribute to pop culture and, love it or hate it, that song is pop culture,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s songs that supposedly 17-year-olds are performing for other 17-year-olds,” Murphy said. “I think younger kids have a definite reaction to that song.”
The reactions to the “Glee” version aren’t as bad as Black’s, with fans agreeing it’s decidedly the better version of the two. It’s also already cracked the Top 75 on iTunes and is sure to climb as the “Glee” prom episode airs Tuesday night on Fox.
Meanwhile, Black’s “Friday” has sold over 100,000 digital downloads. The single peaked at #58 on the Billboard Hot 100.
