Laguna Niguel, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – Wayne Gretzky is still the Great One.
Gretzyky’s rookie card sold for a record $94,163 at an online sports memorabilia auction Sunday. California-based SPC Auctions said it was the highest price ever paid for an ice hockey player’s card.
The card sold Sunday was believed to be in mint condition. Increasing the card’s value was the fact that it was graded a 10, a pristine rating, by evaluators from PSA.
The 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee card shows Canadian Gretzky in his Edmonton Oilers’ uniform during his first season in the National Hockey League. That season Gretzky scored 41 goals and 110 points in 60 games.
The all-time record for a hockey card is a tie between a 1910-11 C56 Newsy Lalonde and a 1911-12 C55 Georges Vezina that both sold for $100,000.
Gretzky’s official contract from the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League from 1977 also sold at the auction and went for $22, 039.20
