Denver, CO, United States (AHN Sports) – National and local tennis heroes, in particular African American tennis pioneers and stars, highlight an exhibit in Denver this month.
The “Breaking the Barriers: An Exhibition in Courage” exhibit chronicles the origins and history of African American tennis.
It is on display through June at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library.
The Colorado premiere is product of the partnership between the United States Tennis Association Colorado district and the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library.
The exhibit, traditionally featured at the U.S. Open in New York, also highlights early black tennis champions.
African American tennis champions from the 1800s through the civil rights movement and modern-era greats such as the Williams sisters are featured on the 80-foot wall exhibit.
A portrait series and the documentary screening of: “Crossing the Net: Denver City Park and the Black Tennis Experience,” will also be part of the event.
It will showcase past and present local pioneers whose efforts from the grassroots levels have helped integrate tennis in Colorado.
The Colorado exhibit is free and open to the public.
