New York City, NY, United States (AHN) – Lauren Bush is using her last name and her experience in fashion to help raise awareness about ethically sustainable clothing. In 2008, Bush launched an ethical fashion line called Lauren Pierce, and it’s helping to raise awareness.
Bush, who started modeling at 15 years old, said her experience in modeling prompted her foray into fashion design, but she also feels strongly about producing clothes that are ethically made.
Bush’s latest collection for her label features two styles: a wrap-around skirt that features draping and a multi-colored, light summer dress. The dress was hand-dyed by women in the Congo, Bush told Vogue.com, and each piece is made of hemp silk and organic cotton.
“I think it’s really interesting to have a story behind the clothes you wear,” Bush told the fashion website. “The idea of two styles came about because I want to keep it simple. My motivation is to highlight the talent of these women and of the fabrics. Also each silhouette is suitable for different types of women – I like that idea.”
Bush was inspired to work with local artisans after traveling a lot and seeing the different ways people were making clothing. She was inspired by each local’s work ethic and techniques. “The people doing this didn’t have a global marketplace,” she said. “I wanted to give these women the marketplace they deserved.”
Bush added that she’s happy to see changing attitudes toward sustainable high-end fashion, and hopes her brand, Lauren Pierce, can keep changing it.
“Definitely, the public are more consumer-conscious now,” Bush said. “It’s not completely mainstream but there are so many great young designers that are using sustainable fabrics in a really exciting way. There’s so much to see. We’re at a real turning point.”
