Frankfort, KY, United States (AHN) – GOP Senate candidate Rand Paul has pulled ahead of Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway, according to a new poll.
SurveyUSA’s latest poll has Paul ahead 55 percent to 40 percent, up from a lead of 51 percent to 43 percent in July.
The Tea Party-backed Republican has 56 percent support among independents and 32 percent among Democrats. In contrast, Conway holds 34 percent of independents and 13 percent of GOP voters.
The poll was conducted last week, the same time a CN2 Politics/Braun survey found a much tighter race with Paul leading Conway, 43 percent to 37 percent.
The CN2 Politics/Braun survey also found Conway with a better favorability rating.
Fifty percent of voters view the Democrat favorably while 23 percent unfavorably. Paul, who recently came under fire for arguing that drug addiction is “not a real pressing issue” and refusing to say he would vote for the Civil Rights Act, is viewed positively by 49 percent and negatively by 33 percent.
The two candidates are seeking the seat of retiring incumbent Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) this November.
Conway has consistently trailed Paul, an eye surgeon and the son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), in polls this year. He came out of a divisive primary race against Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo in May, the same month Paul defeated Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the Republican primary despite party leaders backing Grayson.
The race is rated a tossup by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.
