Monterey, CA, United States (AHN) – Ted Schulz claimed his first victory on the Champions Tour Sunday and he had to survive a final round charge by Tom Pernice Jr. to do it.

Schulz, the leader going into the final round of the First Tee Open at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links, started the day four shots clear of Pernice.

Pernice got off to a sensational start, he was five under through the first six holes after he made an eagle at the par five sixth.

He bogeyed the seventh but still made the turn in 32, four under and made up two shots on Schulz, who had his own eagle at the sixth and shot 34 on the front nine.

Schulz bogeyed the par four 11th, then Pernice made a birdie at the par three 12th to tie for the lead. It stayed that way until Pernice bogeyed the par four 16th.

With a one-shot lead, Schulz birdied the 17th, the hole he bogeyed on Saturday. That deuce on the famous hole proved the winning edge.

Schulz’ final round 70 gave him a 14-under par 202 total. Pernice was solo second at 203 after his five-under par 67.

Tom Kite and Mark Calcavecchia closed with 60s and tied at 204. Freddie Couples shot 68 for a 205 and finished alone in fifth.
