Daytona Beach, FL, United States (AHN) – Serena Williams, who withdrew from the U.S. Open due to foot injury, still retains the No. 1 ranking among the world’s women’s tennis player.
The 28-year-old Williams, who is a 13-time major titlist, has a firm grasp of the No. 1 spot with 7,895 ranking points. She has held the position for the last 45 weeks and 119 weeks in her career.
Williams’ closest challenger is No. 2 Caroline Wozniaki, who is fresh off her third straight Pilot Pen Tennis title Saturday.
It was the fourth title of the year and the 10th in the career of Wozniacki, who has 6,410 points.
The 20-year-old Dane, installed as the top seed in the on-going U.S. Open in New York after Williams withdrew, citing injury on her right foot, could set a stage for rematch of last year’s final against second-seeded reigning champion Kim Clijsters.
A former No. 1, Clijsters holds third place with 5,325 ranking points.
Rounding out the top five are Serena’s younger sister, Venus, who has 5,176 points, followed by Jelena Jankovic, who has compiled 5,145 points.
Ranked sixth is Samantha Stosur (4,550 points) followed by Francesca Schiavonne (4,450) and Vera Zvonareva (4,430).
Li Na occupies ninth with 4,015 points, and Agnieszka Radwanska rounds out the women’s top 10 with 3,995.
Meanwhile, the top-ranked Williams, who has not played competitively since ruling the Wimbledon event, is reportedly targeting her return to action at the Pan Pacific Open, which begins Sept. 26.
Williams, who is also the reigning Australian Open champion, has been sidelined since undergoing surgery on the affected foot in mid-July.
According to the WTA Tour, Williams hurt her foot on broken glass at a restaurant last month.
