Brees-Rivers In Preseason Battle; Saints Lead Chargers 17-14 At Half

New Orleans, LA, United States (AHN) – New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and San Diego Chargers signal-caller Philip Rivers already appear to be in midseason form.

Brees passed for over 200 yards and two touchdowns in the opening half of Friday’s preseason game, while Rivers threw for 149 yards and a score.

The Saints took a 17-14 lead on Brees’ scoring strikes to Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem.

Garrett Hartley drilled a 40 yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the opening half to give the Saints the three-point margin.

Brees found Reggie Bush out of the backfield for seven receptions and 70 yards, with the longest being a 38-yard hookup.

Pierre Thomas led the Saints with 25 yards rushing on just four carries, while Bush totaled 16 yards on three attempts.

Rivers also looked sharp, connecting with Antonio Gates 5 times for 66 yards.

Jacob Hester scored one Chargers touchdown on a 6 yard run, while Malcolm Floyd snared a 9 yard scoring strike from Rivers.

Ryan Mathews rushed for 38 yards on 12 carries for the Chargers.
