White Sulphur Springs, WV, United States (AHN) – Jeff Overton knew he was out of sorts at the start of his third round Saturday at the Greenbrier Classic.
He bogeyed two of his first five holes and was falling down the leaderboard.
“It was kinda brutal,” he said of his opening holes, and while Overton stumbled, others soared.
J.B. Holmes and D.A. Points both flirted with the magic number, 59. Holmes missed a 10-foot putt at the 17th hole for eagle that was the difference between a 59 and the 10-under-par 60 he shot.
All Points had to do was birdie one of his final two holes for a 59. Instead, he went bogey-par and finished with 61.
Overton knew he was being overtaken.
He got himself together on the back nine, shooting 31 for a 66 that gave him a three-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round.
He stands alone at 192, 18-under-par. Points’ 61 put him in at 195, 15-under and is Overton’s closest challenger.
Boo Weekley, who shot 63 Friday, had a 67 and was at 13-under. Holmes’ 60 put him in a group at 12-under that included Jonathan Byrd, Brendon de Jonge and Jimmy Walker.
“I was out of my element,” Overton said of his front nine, where he shot a 1-over 35 and trailed Points by two shots.
Then he found his game on the back. He reeled off birdies at 12, 13 and 14 then added two more, one at the par-4 16th then another when he hit the par-5 17th in two and two-putted for his fifth birdie and a 31 coming home.
“I hung in there today,” he said afterward.
Overton also said he’ll need to play really well over the final 18 holes, especially after seeing Holmes put up a 60 and Points a 61.
“You know someone behind me is gonna shoot something nuts,” he said, looking forward to his final round on Sunday.
