Montreal, Quebec, Canada (AHN) – Known for his ability to agitate opponents during his playing days, Georges Laraque has taken a very different role following his retirement.
The former Montreal Canadiens tough guy was named the new deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada Saturday.
Laraque, also a radio show host, activist and vegan, will use the post to try and promote the link between physical health and the environment.
The 260-pound, 14-year NHL veteran last played for the Canadiens before they bought out his contract in 2010.
Laraque, 33, scored his lone goal of the season following the devastating earthquake in his parents homeland of Haiti.
The Montreal native dedicated the goal to the victims of the quake, including several of his own relatives who were still missing.
Laraque was the 31st overall draft pick in 1995 by the Edmonton Oilers and played for the Coyotes and Penguins before landing in his home town for the last two years.
The ferocious right wing scored 53 goals and dished out 100 assists in 695 career games.
Laraque’s new role puts him second in command behind party leader Elizabeth May.
