NY, NY, United States (AHN) – The New York Jets have reportedly reached out to free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens, however the Cincinnati Bengals remain the favorite to land the high-profile declining receiver.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Jets have contacted Owens’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about bringing the media magnet to camp.
The Bengals are first in line to sign Owens, who met with the team before they signed Antonio Bryant earlier this offseason.
Cincinnati has confirmed its interest in Owens to help a passing offense ranked 26th in the league with only 180 yards per game last season.
The Bengals are offering Owens an incentive-laden contract, but the aging wide out has yet to officially accept the offer.
The Jets have made similar moves in the past, trading to acquire Brett Favre in his 18th season and signing aging legendary back LaDainian Tomlinson.
Owens had his least productive full season as a pro in 2009, starting all 16 games but failing to record 1,000 yards (829) and at least nine touchdowns (5) for just the second time in 10 seasons.
Owens played just seven games in 2005, but still helped the Philadelphia Eagles reach the Super Bowl while recording 763 yards and six touchdowns.
