Paris, France (AHN) – Spain’s Alberto Contador snared his third Tour de France Sunday, edging Andy Schleck of Luxembourg by 39 seconds.
Denis Menchov of Russia was third overall, while Mark Cavendish of Britain won the 20th and final stage.
Contador captured his third title in four years and set up a potential rivalry with Schleck for years to come after passing his foe who had chain woes on stage 15.
Although Contador indicated he did not know about his error in etiquette until it was too late, Schleck took some verbal swipes at his competitor.
Contador and Schleck are the future of the sport, while the great Lance Armstrong is becoming a part of its past.
Armstrong finished in 23rd place, nearly 40 minutes behind Contador after being doomed by spills early-on.
