Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – The United States on Friday confirmed that al Qaida is breeding and posing a terror threat from the Maghreb and North African regions.
State Department Spokesman P J Crowley noted “the threat in the Maghreb is a threat, first and foremost, within the region. We’ve seen over time that threat emanate to portions of Europe.”
On the threat posed to the U.S., Crowley told journalists, “Of course, it has the potential to threaten the United States as well. We are concerned about this entire network, not only al-Qaida in its form in the tribal areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan, but anyone who chooses to affiliate themselves with al-Qaida, this network, and its ideology.”
Crowley highlighted the importance of the vigilance against these saying, “So it is something that is vitally important to us. It comes up in our regular contacts with governments in the Maghreb and across North Africa. It is a significant aspect of our ongoing efforts in that region.”
We have exchanged intelligence and security – intelligence information and security and cooperation with these countries because we see this as a common threat,” Crowley concluded.
