Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – A U.S. immigration court has granted President Barack Obama’s aunt, Zeituni Onyango, asylum and allowed her to apply for a work visa and green card.

The court’s ruling was mailed to Onyango’s apartment in South Boston on Friday. One of her lawyers, Scott Bratton, declined to reveal to reporters her reason for asking asylum.

In her first application for asylum, which was rejected last year, cited violence in Kenya as her reason for seeking safe haven in the U.S. In the latest application, her lawyers cited her disability as a reason.

Onyango has been in the U.S. since 2000. She faced deportation in 2004 but stayed in Boston. Her illegal alien status came out in the open just days before Obama was elected into office in November 2008.

Obama was unaware that her aunt was living illegally in the country and a judge later suspended her deportation and reopened her asylum case.
