Las Vegas, NV, United States (AHN) – Former Corona High star and LPGA pro Erica Blasberg has died Sunday in Henderson, Nev., according to the Tour and her agent, Chase Callahan. She was 25.
The cause of death of Blasberg, who was in her sixth season on the LPGA Tour, was unknown, as the circumstances are currently under investigation, according to her agent and authorities Monday.
Blasberg, who turned pro in June 2004 and played on the Futures Tour that season, was considered one of the most photogenic players in the LPGA.
After shooting a 62 in one round and shattering the tour’s 18-hole scoring mark, Blasberg went on to rule the Laconia Savings Bank Futures Golf Classic.
Apart from the Laconia Savings triumph, she posted four top-10s in eight starts on the Duramed Futures Tour before qualifying for the LPGA later that fall.
She began competing on the LPGA Tour on 2005, making the cut in most of her early events, but not contending for top positions.
Blasberg, in more than her five years on the tour, struggled and rarely finished among the top contenders.
She registered her best year on the Tour in 2008, when she finished a career-best tie for eighth at the SBS Open at Turtle Bay, which she co-led with top player Annika Sorenstam after three rounds.
That the year, she finished for the first time among the LPGA’s top 100 players, making 11 cuts in 23 starts during that campaign.
Blasberg, who was born in Orange, grew up in Corona, where she honed her game throughout the Inland area.
She eventually became the star on the boys’ golf team at Corona High School from which she graduated in 2002.
During college, Blasberg found greater success, winning six tournaments in two years.
While at the University of Arizona, she received various recognitions, including being named ’03 NGCA Freshman of the Year and Pac-10 Player of the Year.
She was also part of the victorious 2004 Curtis Cup team.
This year, Blasberg played her only LPGA Tour event two weeks ago in Mexico, finishing for a tie for 44th.
