Dallas, TX, United States (AHN) – Dallas Cowboys sent a former first-round pick, linebacker Bobby Carpenter to the St. Louis Rams Monday for another player who hasn’t lived up to first-round expectations, tackle Alex Barron.

Carpenter, 26, was drafted 18th overall out of college football giant Ohio State, but has only managed 3.5 sacks in four seasons with Dallas.

The 6-foot-2, 250-lb Ohio native will try to turn his fortunes around switching from St. Louis’ 3-4 defense to the Cowboys’ 4-3, where he can play middle linebacker.

Dallas drafted Penn State’s Sean Lee in the second round last month to likely replace Carpenter.

Barron, 27, was drafted 19th overall by St. Louis out of Florida State in 2005. He missed the entire 2008 season and failed to impress despite 16 starts in 2009.

The South Carolina native led the league with five holding calls last season and will have to compete with tackle Doug Free to start.
