Knoxville, TN, United States (AHN) – A gunman opened fire outside a hospital in eastern Tennessee late Monday, killing one person and wounding two others before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting occured about 4:30 pm in the area in Parkwest Medical Center where patients are discharged.

One victim died and two others were brought to the trauma unit at University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The gunman is believed to have died of a self-inflicted wound. His identity is being withheld while his family is notified. While the motive is still being investigated, local reports cite officials as saying he was not an employee at Parkwest.

The three victims are all employees of the hospital, Parkwest said in a statement.

The fatality was Rachel Wattenbarger, 40, while the injured were Ariane Guerin, 26, and Nancy Chancellor, 32.

Parkwest Medical Center said it is “safe and secure” and no longer on lockdown while the investigation is continuing.

“Parkwest and Covenant Health express condolences to the victims and their families, and appreciation for the staff who responded quickly to Monday’s tragedy,” it added. “Hospital chaplains are onsite; chaplains and counselors will be available throughout the day on Tuesday.”
