Augusta, GA, United States (AHN) – Tiger Woods, who almost appears to be in midseason form, began his return to golf with his first swing in official competition after nearly four months of absence, splitting the fairway Thursday at Augusta National’s first hole.

The embattled world No.1’s first shot- -a drive on the 445-yard first hole – -ended a self-imposed exile from golf after revelations of marital infidelities surfaced that engulfed his personal life and career.

The four-time Masters champion, nervous of the reception he would receive at Augusta, received a big cheer when his name was announced and also after his tee shot landed on the right side of the fairway.

Playing for the first time since winning the Australian Masters in November, Woods spun the club in his hand after hitting the shot. He made par.

He then picked up his first birdie on the par-4 third hole.

After a bogey at the par-4 seventh, he had an eagle on the par-5 eighth that got more cheers from the gallery.

Woods is 2 under through 10 holes.

Tom Watson and Phil Mickelson are tied atop the leaderboard with an opening-round 67.

Joining them were Y.E. Yang and Lee Westwood.
