New York, NY, United States (AHN) – New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes arrived at Spring Training Wednesday, as he participated in some stretching and agility exercises for the first time since being cleared of his thyroid problems.

Reyes, a two-time MLB All-Star, only played 35 games last season due to several injuries (calf and hamstring).

Reyes, 26, was shut down for several weeks, after he was diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid gland, also referred as the overproduction of thyroid hormone.

After undergoing various treatments, Reyes’ thyroid level became normal and was permitted to resume spring training Tuesday.

Reyes, the 2006 Silver Slugger Award winner, performed a few light exercises and batting drills for 75 minutes Wednesday.

Gasping for air, Reyes admitted he needs more time to get in shape.

Mets Manager Jerry Manuel said he will implement some exercises and diet programs to help Reyes stay healthy throughout his rehabilitation and training.

Reports indicated Reyes is not allowed to eat sea foods, which could trigger increased thyroid hormone readings.

Reyes will also undergo regular thyroid hormone readings every week to monitor his condition.

With just a few weeks before opening day, Reyes is questionable to start the regular season.

Reyes, the Mets all-time leader in triples and stolen bases, batted .279 with two homers, 15 RBI, and 18 runs last season.
