Houston, TX, United States (AHN) – University of Houston basketball coach Tom Penders will resign, it was reported Sunday.

The Cougars earned a trip to the NCAA tournament after upsetting Texas-El Paso, and went on to win the Conference USA championship. Houston lost to Maryland Friday in the first round of the tourney.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Houston athletic director Mack Rhoades met with the coach Sunday.

“There will be an announcement regarding the future of the men’s basketball program in the near future,” Rhoades said about a replacement.

Former Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie could reportedly replace Penders, who finished with an overall record of 121-77 after six seasons with the Cougars.

There were no comments from Penders on his reason for vacating his position.
