Midair Plane Collision Leaves Three Dead

Gainesville, FL, United States (AHN) – The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a midair plane collision outside of Gainesville, Fla. A spokesman for the agency says three people perished in the accident.

Investigators say two small planes a single-engine Piper and an experimental aircraft collided Saturday about 11:51 a.m. a short distance from the Williston Municipal Airport. Neither plane took off from the airport and it remains unclear if either was trying to land at the airport.

Both of the pilots flying the planes died.

The wreckage from from the crash was scattered over a half-mile long and a quarter-mile wide of rural land.

Most of the debris field landed behind a home that appeared to be unoccupied at the time of the collision.

According to FAA records, the Piper is registered to ARO Wings in Morriston, Florida. The experimental aircraft is registered to Lee Sentman of Dewey, Ill.
