Providence, RI, United States (AHN) – Armon Bassett scored 32 points to lead four starters in double figures as the 14-seed Ohio Bobcats pulled off a surprisingly lopsided 97-83 upset win over the No. 3-seeded Georgetown Hoyas Thursday in the Midwest region.

D.J. Cooper shot an impressive 8-for-12 from the field to finish with 23 points and eight assists. DeVaugh Washington added 12 points and 10 boards and Tommy Freeman scored 11.

The Hoyas (23-11) defense fell apart, allowing a season-high 13 three-pointers and 97 points for the first time ever in the NCAA Tourney. The 14-point margin of defeat is also the largest ever for a 14 seed over a three seed.

Ohio (22-14) added to their trouble by shooting a season-high 58.2 percent (32-for-55), including 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from three.

The Bobcats took the lead for good halfway through the first half and led by as much as 19 in the second.

Georgetown shot well (50.2 percent) and outrebounded Ohio 31-24, but couldn’t keep up with the Bobcats’ three-point shooting.

Chris Wright led the Hoyas with 28 points, Greg Monroe had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Hollis Thompson scored 16 points.

Leading scorer Austin Freeman shot just 4-for-11 from the field to finish with nine points, well below his season average (16.7).

Ohio had an improbable entry into the Tourney, finishing 7-9 in the MAC for a nine seed in the conference tourney. But the Bobcats ran through the MAC tourney and defeated defending champion Akron in the final to gain an automatic birth.

With their play peaking at the right time, the Bobcats advance to the second round for the first time since 1983.They will face six seed Tennessee for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen.
