Delaney Leads First Half Charge As VA. Tech Powers By Quinnipiac

Blacksburg, VA, United States (AHN) – Malcolm Delaney scored 25 points, as the Virginia Tech Hokies got past the Quinnipiac Bobcats 81-61 in the first round of the NIT Wednesday night.

The ACC’s leading scorer was coming off a dismal 3-for-15 performance in an ACC quarterfinal loss to Miami.

Delaney went 6-of-9 and hit four threes in the first half as the Hokies pulled away. He finished 9-for-15 with six rebounds and five dimes.

Dorenzo Hudson added 19 points for top-seeded Tech, which took a 39-27 lead at the break and led by as much as 23.

The Bobcats, who led the nation in rebounding margin (+9.2) were outrebounded 42-30. The Hokies shot 45.3 percent and held Quinnipiac to 38.1

Justin Rutty led Quinnipiac (23-10) with 22 points and James Johnson added 17 for the Northeast Conference regular season champs.

The Hokies (24-8) advanced to play Connecticut at home in the second round.
