Oakland, CA, United States (AHN) – The Oakland Athletics reportedly shut down second-year closer Andre Bailey for 5-7 days, after he suffered and injury on his right elbow Thursday.
Bailey, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, has been diagnosed with tennis elbow, a condition where the outer part of the elbow softens.
Bailey, 25, said he was a little bit bothered after Sunday’s last outing.
“It’s just a little discomfort,” Bailey told MLB.com. “I felt something after my last outing [Sunday], so I figured I should have it checked out. I’ll just be doing some therapy and give it some rest.
The Athletics closer said the injury was probably caused by an accumulation of heavy workload on his throwing arm.
“Last year was probably the heaviest workload on my arm, so this is probably just from kicking it back up and my arm trying to get used to it again, said Bailey”
Bailey had an impressive rookie season, going 6-3 with a 1.84 ERA, 26 saves and 91 strikeouts in 68 appearances.
He was also selected to play in the 2009 All-Star game.
Bailey said he expects his injury to heal before opening day.
