San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – The 6th Annual San Francisco Women’s Film Festival (SFWFF) will kick off on April 17 with a diverse array of film by both local and international acclaimed women in all areas of film.

The festival is sure to have something for everyone, including documentaries, narrative fiction and experimental films.

According to a press release, the SFWFF’s mission is to honor, showcase, and facilitate the creation of films directed or co-directed by women.

The 2010 selection of diverse films will help to celebrate the exceptional contributions of women in the world of cinema and represents a convergence of excellence in filmmaking from around the globe.

The festival will open at the Roxie Theater, honoring renowned film maker, activist and educator Judith Helfand. The evening will include 94-minute reel showing her notable documentary “Healthy Baby Girl,” excerpts from “Blue Vinyl” and short film “Ek Velt.”

Helfand will also hold a workshop on how to use the media as a tool for community organizing and environmental activism.

“The Women Empowerment and Environmental Film programs present films that investigate issues of harmful environmental practices as well as celebrate the women who are fighting back,” says Scarlett Shepard, founder of the Women’s Film Institute and SFWFF.

SFWFF will continue to run for five days at the Roxie Theater and other community centers across the San Francisco Bay Area. The festival will include numerous films that were selected from over 800 submissions and is expecting to have around 3,500 people in attendance. For more information, head to www.sfwff.com.
